CAP HITS AFTER THE AUCTION DRAFT HIT THE FAAB

Once the Auction Draft is done, the Salary Cap of $202 is done and gone.  The OG owners are used to having the one cap for the whole year, preaseason and regular season.  But with the switch to Yahoo in 2017, and to simplify our rules, it's basically "use it or lose it" in the Auction Draft.

Teams have $100 FAABs (Free Agent Acquisition Budget) to sign free agents after the Auction Draft.  This will be where teams apply the cap hits as well due to trades.

Melvin asked: "HOW DO CAP HITS WORK IF LET'S SAY TRADING FOR A PLAYER $30 X 2 YEARS?"

Melvin signed RB Alvin Kamara at $30 x 2 years in the 2018 Auction Draft.  So Kamara has already been "paid" $30 in 2018 (via Melvin's $202 cap).  As with our old league, we still have to account for the accelerated cap hit due to the assumed signing bonus."  Prior to last season, we had three levels of signing bonuses based on salary.  In 2017, we simplified it to 50%, whatever the salary is.  So the accelarated cap hit for Kamara's $30 in 2019 is $15 ($30 x 0.5).  That accelerated $15 cap hit is subtracted from Melvin's 2018 FAAB.

How much does Kamara cost the owner receiving him in the trade?  Well, Melvin paid him his $30 in 2018.  So Kamara costs the other owner NOTHING in 2018.  No cap hit to his/her FAAB.

How much in 2019?  Since $15 accelerated and hit Melvin's FAAB in 2018, Kamara is only owed $15 in 2019.  Kamara will cost only $15 of the owner's 2019 cap of $202.  [Note: We will be adding two roster spots for 2 more rookies, so the cap will be $204].

In 2020, the owner can franchise/transition tag Alvin Kamara, but the 20% raise will be off his salary of $30.

An easy trade would be $30 Kamara for Fidel's $30 DAVANTE ADAMS.  But Fidel has WR Michael Thomas, Kamara's teammate on the New Orleans Saints.  Melvin, would you go for $30 Kamara for $30 WR Michael Thomas?  I'm not sure Fidel would though.  Fidel passed on Kamara at #2, then signed Michael Thomas at #13 -- also at $30.
